Core Skills Course Outline

Overview

Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) is the most empirically based and effective form of couple’s therapy.  EFT is a short term (8-20 sessions) and structured approach. There is a substantial body of research outlining the effectiveness of EFT. Research studies find that 70-75% of couples move from marital distress to recovery and approximately 90% show significant improvements. There is also research on the change process and predictors of success.

EFT is based on a clear, explicit attachment conceptualization of marital distress and adult love. These conceptualizations are supported by empirical research on the nature of distress and adult attachment. EFT is collaborative and respectful of clients. Change strategies and interventions are specific and clear, and key moves and moments in the change process have been mapped into nine steps and three stages of change.

The goals of EFT are to 1) expand and reorganize key emotional responses; 2) create a shift in partner’s interactional positions and initiate new cycles of interaction, and 3) foster the creation of a secure bond between partners.

The Core Skills Training

Core Skills provides intensive training in the theory and practice of Emotionally Focused Therapy. It is a small group experience (15 participants maximum) designed to provide didactic instruction with experiential practice. Core Skills training takes place over four weekends, 12 hours each weekend, every 6 weeks to 3 months over the course of approximately 9 months to 1 year. Each weekend focuses on particular steps or change in events of the EFT treatment model.

Who should attend?

Participants are required to have completed an EFT Externship and be willing to present their own work through audio/videotape presentation.

 Learning Objectives

The objective of this workshop is for participants to deepen their working knowledge of and use of EFT.  Participants will learn:

  1. To complete an EFT assessment, including an understanding of and ways to work with a couple’s negative interactional cycle.
  2. To identify attachment emotions that are a target and agent of change.
  3. To use EFT interventions to access and heightened attachment emotions.
  4. The nine steps of EFT.
  5. The major EFT change events, de-escalation, withdrawer re-engagement and blamer softening
