Philadelphia Center for Emotionally Focussed Therapy Leader:

Cheryl Sparks, PhD, LPC

After working for years as a physical therapist, I switched careers and am now an LPC with a PhD in marriage and family therapy. After doing individual psychodynamic psychotherapy for several years, I realized that so much of what was happening in the distressed individual would best be healed by a deeper, healthier connection with their partner. I began to pursue a PhD in MFT and simultaneously began training in EFT. After doing a review of the outcome based research literature, I found that there is no other model so well validated. Not surprisingly, my work with couples became much more effective when I began to use EFT, even before certification. For years I enjoyed being faculty and co-director of the Marriage and Family Therapy department at Eastern University, where I taught courses in couples therapy, trauma, and topics like the integration of faith and attachment theory. I feel passionate about supporting and supervising other therapists in learning and growing in their work using this model. In my clinical practice in Wayne, PA and online, I work primarily with couples, adult children and parents, and supervising therapists in training. An unforeseen benefit of joining PCEFT has been the community and friendship I’ve experienced–it’s a place where we can learn and grow together and encourage each other. We hope you join us!

If you are a therapist hoping to learn more about cutting edge therapy, or a potential client looking for highly effective therapy for yourself, your relationship, or your family, you’ve come to the right place!
