Eft Specifics And Road To Certification

EFT EXTERNSHIP

Training in EFT is available at different levels ranging from introductory to advanced to certification. 

At the introductory level, an EFT Externship is a four day training that gives participants a foundation in EFT theory and practice. 

The EFT Externship is ICEEFT endorsed and is led by our ICEEFT certified trainer Dr. Ting Liu. This EFT Externship provides an overview of all aspects of the model including:

  • A detailed understanding of how EFT is rooted in adult attachment theory
  • The steps and stages of EFT
  • The use of EFT Tango
  • EFT interventions and their use in different stages of therapy
  • Presentation of EFT theory and clinical techniques
  • Skills training exercises, clinical case discussions, and videotape discussions

The Externship provides an immersive and experiential experience in EFT by using a variety of teaching methods that are didactic such as presentations as well as interactive such as role plays, video tape discussions, and case consultations.

EFT CORE SKILLS

At the advanced level, our ICEEFT endorsed EFT Core Skills Training is available to participants who have completed the EFT Externship. Core Skills Training is led by our ICEEFT certified trainer Dr. Ting Liu. This training is offered in a small group format and is limited to 10-15 participants and provides and intensive in the theory and practice of EFT.

The Core Skills Training is both didactic and interactive in its format with an emphasis on individualized attention in a small group format. Role play exercises help participants to practice skills in a safe learning environment as participants have the opportunity to build a community with fellow attendees over the time frame of the sessions. Moreover, participants use Core Skills training to video tape and present in a small group their work with a couple. They will receive live feedback on their video presentations in tandem with their learning of the Core Skills material. 

Core Skills is a series of four, two-day training sessions that provide:

  1. How to complete an EFT assessment, including an understanding of and ways to work with a couple’s negative interactional cycle
  2. How to identify attachment emotions that are a target and agent of change
  3. How to use specific EFT interventions to access, heighten, and contain attachment emotions
  4. How to map the 3 stages and nine steps of EFT and how to apply the 5 moves of the EFT Tango in the different stages and steps.
  5. How to bring about the major EFT change events of de-escalation, withdrawer-re-engagement, and blamer softening.
  6. How to use work through challenging clinical issues, specific couples’ concerns that arise during participants’ discussions and video tape presentations.

CEUs:

12 CEUs per training session = 48 CEUs total

EFT ROAD TO CERTIFICATION 

Level 1: Certified EFT Therapist

For participants looking to become EFT Certified Therapists it is a requirement to complete the Externship as well as the Core Skills Training. Once these trainings are complete, an additional 8 hours of supervision is required by a certified EFT supervisor in an individual or a group format. Applicants will complete an application packet in accordance with ICEEFT guidelines. Part of the application packet requires submission of video tapes showing the applicant working with a couple in both stage 1 and stage 2 of EFT. The guidelines for video tape submission, and, more generally, for the application process for certification are available on the ICEEFT website.

Level 2: Certified EFT Supervisor

If certified EFT therapists decide to pursue certification as an EFT Supervisor then they would pursue guidelines for application that are available on the ICEEFT website.
